Black Nativity" is a musical adaptation of the traditional Nativity story, infused with African American culture, spirituality, and music. Originally written by the renowned poet and playwright Langston Hughes in 1961, the production reimagines the birth of Jesus through the lens of African American gospel music, dance, and narration. Hughes's version of the Nativity story celebrates the vibrant cultural expressions of the African American community, blending the sacred and the contemporary in a powerful and uplifting retelling. The musical has become a cherished holiday tradition in many communities, known for its joyful, soulful renditions of gospel classics and its poignant portrayal of faith and resilience.
